It does take practice to stop ourselves from doing

It does take practice to stop ourselves from doing or saying what we feel like doing or saying once our fight or flight system has been activated.
.
This is when everything in our body is chemically gearing up for defence or attack and it doesn't feel appealing to take a breath. Take a step back. Call a time out - not for our child. But for ourself.
.
In my latest Curious Not Furious podcast episode I talk about how self-care enables us to feel more regulated - so that a little bit of consciousness can seep into those moments - and allow us to do things differently. If not all the time - then more of the time!
.
Without awareness it's easy to overlook the signs that we are dysregulated.. but looking at your behaviours - your reactions - your interpretation of events and what comes out of your mouth - you might be able to know your unique signs.
.
For me- it's
- when I become more critical
- when I rush - also when I don't need to
- when I blame
- feel overwhelmed by noise and mess.
.
We can help ourselves so much by merely noticing these sign and see them as a warning sound on a reversing car! - time to take action toward meeting our own needs
.
- by lowering the bar on our own expectations
.
- setting a boundary
.
- moving our body
.
- disappointing people around us who depend on our constant giving
.

“Come on… you’ve had everything you could possibly want today. Stop moaning”
.
We say - thinking that our logic and attempts at seeing the record straight will change our child’s feelings.
.
Feelings don’t change by being negates, diminished or shamed. They change when allowed and listened to.
.
And we don’t have to agree.
.
Imagine if instead of;
“You’re constantly moaning”
.
We said to our child (or partner):
.
“What’s going on for you love? You sound like it’s a little difficult right now”
.
We open each other up when we don’t meet moaning, complaining or issues of fairness with judgement - but curiosity.
.
And often we only need to be a container - not fix - not contradict and not agree.

Cooperation and good listening is what we all year

Cooperation and good listening is what we all yearn for as parents.
.
But the paradox is, the more we are willing to make room for our child’s no, the more cooperative they become.
.
This doesn’t mean giving in or getting stuck in lengthy debates.
But about getting curious when;
.
🌟It feels like force is needed to move our child from a-b
.
🌟When our child flatly refuses to do what we ask them to do.
.
🌟When they invent reasons to get out of something
.
The more we can allow our child to have their no - and not need them to feel any different - the more easy it becomes for them to follow our agenda.
.
Sometimes their no is not to what we are asking them to do - but to our way of going about it.
.
When children feel that their no is allowed, they come to know that they matter. And it becomes a lot easier to stay true to themselves later on in life when pressures to fit in, do more and be more - mount.
.

During this Easter break I’m reminded how strong

During this Easter break I’m reminded how strong my tendency to merge with my loved ones really is. How, before I know it - I forget about my own admin, neglect my personal chores and friendships and things that require my attention - because I can’t tend to it unless I create some structure in my day that allows me to have a moment to myself.
.
Do you know that feeling?
.
Rarely do we have a team of people around us who encourage us to do what we need to do to be resourced. They’re too busy tending to their own needs.
.
So when holiday mode sets in and structure disappears - we are having to actively ask for what we need. Which can be uncomfortable - and really difficult.
- alone time in the kitchen cooking
- a non-rushed bath
- a couple of hours in the house without the family
- stepping out of the house without the kids
.
Whatever you need - see if you can prioritise it and know that your feelings of selfishness when someone protests is not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you’re doing it just right!
